Does your child LOVE Harry Potter? Well they’re certainly not alone. J.K. Rowling took the world by storm with her Harry Potter books and now the movies. Creating a harry potter themed birthday party can be a fantastic idea for your kids upcoming birthday party. The great thing about Harry Potter is that it has such a rich story to draw from, and all with items that kids already know and love.

It’s not a challenge coming up with some good ideas, from the Sorting Hat to Quidditch and the Golden Snitch; you have an absolute wealth of options to choose from when it comes to harry potter party supplies. Let us examine some of them and discuss a few harry potter party ideas to make your child’s birthday a magical event.

Harry Potter Birthday Party Supplies

When organizing a harry potter themed birthday party, it’s important that you make or buy some harry potter party supplies.

Invitations

Themed invitations really set the scene and atmosphere for the birthday party, so put some effort into it or buy some nice pre-made ones. You could make it a special invitation to an event at Hogwarts, such as the Yule Ball or the Tri-Wizard tournament. You could even make it a ‘You’ve been chosen to attend Hogwards School of Witchcraft and Wizardry’ invitation.

Decorations

The world of Harry Potter itself should give you plenty of ideas for decorations, but think along the lines of cauldrons, wizard hats, black table cloths and purple and gold balloons. And wands of course, don’t forget the wands! If you have the time, you could make some fantastic homemade decorations, but there are lots of harry potter party supplies packs available that can provide you with everything you need.

Food

The food at the party can be a great way to be creative and generate a good ‘Harry Potter’ atmosphere. Jelly beans are a must (labeled Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans of course), and cups labeled with Butter Beer are also a good option (creaming soda should work here).

Serve up some hot soup in a cauldron-like pot, and perhaps some snacks and drinks with names like Golden Elixir, Polyjuice Potion, Mandrake Root – you get the idea! You could even organize a potion making class, and help the kids make their own ‘potion’ with carefully labeled ingredients. Make sure the ingredients mix well; it’s a good idea to practice the recipes before the party to ensure they taste great.

If you’re ever stuck for ideas, simply peruse the novels for ideas – there are hundreds of them contained within those pages!

Costumes

Dressing up in costumes can really make the party a special day, but it will require some participation from the other parents to help their kids. Chat with them, and see if this is something they would all like to get involved in.

Alternatively, you could make up some wizard robes yourself, with all of the four house symbols (Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin) – and let the kids pick their own house upon entering the party. Just expect your Slytherin robes to remain untouched, and ensure you have a hefty supply of Gryffindor robes (as they will be the most popular).

Games

Harry Potter themed birthday games will get the party off to a cracking start. Simply take some existing party game ideas, and put a Harry Potter spin on them. Again, the books are the most valuable resource you’ve got for coming up with ideas.

How about a variation of pin the tail on the donkey? Make Harry’s glasses the object that needs to be pinned in the right spot.

Or what about a transfiguration game? Make it similar to charades, except the child is magically transformed into an item or animal that they have to act out and the other children have to guess what they are.

Or you could do a trivia game, in the form of an O.W.L Hogwart’s Exam (Ordinary Wizarding Levels). It can just be a trivia game built with questions inspired from the books and films. Put some harder ones in there for the dedicated Harry Potter fans!

You could also do a treasure hunt style game, called ‘Search for the Golden Snitch’. Give some clues to objects hidden around the house that will lead them to a golden snitch, and the winner gets a treasure filled loot bag of Harry Potter items.

Final Thoughts

The best advice I can give is to use your imagination to come up with Harry Potter party supplies ideas. There are numerous party packs available to purchase, these can make things easier in terms of themed balloons, cups, napkins etc (there are some shopping links below for these cheap items). Getting one of those can help you to focus on the really creative things, like the cake, food and party games. Try to make it a magical extravaganza – something that any harry potter fan will love!
